Electric Shaver vs. Razor: The Duel

electric shaver and Manual ShaverPersonal hygiene is very important for everyone, for all of us, it whether we think about it or not, this is part of our daily routine.

When talking about hygiene, body hair plays a very important role. 80% of the things we regularly do to our bodies are related to body hair. Shampooing, plucking, and shaving are just few examples. Body hair grows quickly for men which means they need to shave regularly. Some people say that the growth of body hair depends on what equipment you are using when you shave it. In this article, we will identify which is the best: electric shaver vs. razor.

The most obvious difference between an Electric Shaver, and a Manual Razor , is the Shaver needs Electricity (at some point) and the Razor does not. The Razor is a much less complicated device, and on the surface, both do the same job, give or take.

Electric shaver vs. razor: Maintenance

If you use it every day, a good electric shaver will last up to 3 years while the razor blade needs to be replaced every few days. If you barely use it, the electric shaver will last up to 5 years and the razor blade needs to be replaced every couple of weeks. Electric shavers such as the Braun series 790cc shaver will last for 7 years or more.

Electric shaver vs. razor: Cost

The top rated electric shaver will cost $200 or more. Some shavers, such as Panasonic Arc 5 Blade system would cost more than $300. Assuming that  you’ll be using your $200 Shaver for 3 years, you have spent $66 per year. Aside from that, there’s the annual replacement of blades which adds another $30 more. On some electric shavers, there is a need for cleaning cartridges which cost $60. To sum it all up, you will be paying around $150 per year if you choose the electric shaver.

For the razor, the initial cost will be closer to $15 depending on the brand. Even in the unlikely event that it is a single blade Razor, there will be a need for replacement blades every 3 weeks which adds $30. You will also need a shaving gel which costs $30 or more. So all in all, you will be spending at least $90 per year for a single blade razor good for 3 years, of course the popular 4 and 5 blade offerings will run much higher than that.

Electric shaver vs. razor: Convenience

When it comes to convenience, the place where you are going to shave it is very important. If you are traveling with your electric shaver, you will need to look for a spot where you can plug it, and maybe accommodate a cleaning dock etc . On the other hand, a manual razor can be used everywhere as long as you can see yourself in a mirror to avoid bleeding.

Cuts, Nicks, and Closeness.

This is a big area for consideration, obviously the manual razor is more likely to leave you bleeding, and scratched, but it is generally accepted that a blade still shaves closer than even the very best Electric Razor. On the other hand, for those taking blood thinning medication, a shave without the ultimate smooth finish, is also a shave free from risk.

This is a very superficial discussion, but after a quick look at the most obvious factors, which do you think wins the electric shaver vs. razor matchup?

As always with things affecting the human condition, it’s hard to come up with a generalized verdict.

It always depends on the person who is going to use it. If you are looking for the most affordable solution, a single blade razor might be your choice; if you want the absolute closest shave, it may be the more expensive multi-bladed Razors. However, if you want to avoid the inevitable cuts and scratches, have a skin or medical condition which enters into the conversation there is a good chance that the Electric Shaver is your weapon of choice, and that is where the real question raises its head.

How do I Pick my Shaver?, and that clearly is why we are here.
