“The new old Spice shavers and trimmers look exactly like the Braun shavers and trimmers. Why is Braun producing and promoting Old Spice shavers and trimmers instead of their own? Is Braun in trouble?”
No, Braun is not in trouble. Braun, Gillette and Old Spice are owned by Procter and Gamble (an American multi-national consumer goods company) among many others.
Old Spice is an American grooming Products Company which was acquired by Procter and Gamble in 1990. And Braun is a German consumer products company which became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Gillette Company in 1984. In the year 2005 Procter & Gamble acquired Gillette and hence owned both the Braun and Old Spice brands.
The Old Spice shavers and trimmers re-badged Braun shavers and trimmers. This is just another marketing strategy. The two Old Spice shavers are the Braun Series 3 – 340S-4 (wet/dry) and 320S-4(dry and washable). You can read our Braun series 3 review here. The Old Spice trimmers and clippers are from the Braun Cruzer series.
Based on the latest ads of Old Spice they are at aiming the younger generation more aggressively. This may be one reason why we only see the mid range models of Braun shavers and trimmers in their range. Young people may not fancy buying very expensive shavers and most of them would not have thick beards as older users do. However, Braun Series 3 shavers are very popular and efficient. They are capable of giving a close and clean shave though some people with thick beard may prefer the higher models – Braun Series 5 and Braun Series 7.
